We have the same in Italy as well - the overall "Easter/Spring/Fertility" symbolism seems to be strong in many parts of our Continent (just found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_tapping ). In my small Italian city, it's a proper competition involving hundreds of people in the main square on Easter Fridays.
Yes, eggfighting exists in Austria, too - and not just in those regions with closer ties to the Balkans. I think it is a traditional thing in at least parts of Germany as well.
