Today I'm starting walking again.

The idea was that we were going to come out and walk the dogs. Just go up to where the church is and then come back down again which is about 2 kilometres there and back, but instead we decided to not only go up to the church, but continue on.

We can actually walk for 4.5 kilometres in total past the church in what Tamara calls a “Krug” or circle.

I have walked this route many times over the years and am always amazed at the Vikendica that are along my route.

Let me explain a little about the concept of the Vikendica.

"Vikendica" or weekend houses, are small, usually rural properties that are an integral part of this country’s cultural landscape and are used for a wide range of purposes.

As far as I can make out, the concept of Vikendica, emerged in the post-World War II era, when many urban Bosnians sought refuge in the countryside to escape the pressures of city life.

These weekend houses provided a way to reconnect with nature and enjoy the peace and quiet of rural life.

Vikendica come in a range of sizes and styles, from small, rustic cabins to larger, more modern homes. They are typically located in the countryside or in small villages, away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, and many Bosnians use their vikendica as a place to escape from the stresses of daily life and enjoy the company of family and friends.

In the past, Vikendica were also used as a place to store food and supplies, especially during the war years. During the Bosnian War of the 1990s, many Bosnians fled their homes and sought refuge in their weekend houses.

The house where we live was previously a Vikendica and during the conflict of the 1990’s, Tamara’s parents provided refugees a safe haven from the violence and instability of that time.

Today, Vikendica continue to play an important role in Bosnian culture and society. Many families still use them as a place to escape on weekends and holidays, while others have turned them into permanent residences (like ours).

Some have even been transformed into vacation rental properties, allowing visitors to experience the unique beauty and tranquility of rural Bosnia.

I have come to appreciate the significance that Vikendica play in local life. They are a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the people of this country, and a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and finding peace and tranquility in the midst of a busy and chaotic world.

For me, it’s experiencing things like watching people as I am out on these rural walks (that are right outside my front door), that is what I call living my dream.

It’s still taking time for me to transition fully from the busy, always on the go life I had had for many decades to this simpler, less stressed, lighter life I enjoy.

If you want some tips about living a less stressful life, then a walk through the rural villages of Bosnia and Herzegovina might be a good start point, where you can get some ideas from “the professionals” 😀

I'm not keen on doing YouTube again or posting these to Instagram. So I would just like to stick with Substack.

Please also do share this video it really helps us to grow awareness for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We have a short survey designed to help us improve our Substack. It would be super helpful if you could find under 5 minutes to complete it. Thanks so much in advance.
