The Mlinište Train near Mrkonjić Grad.
Mlinište is located between Glamoč and Mrkonjić Grad.
I have driven past this rusting train for decades and have always wondered about it.
So I took a recent opportunity to get up close and document some of this regions living history.
Apparently, it was used by Tito and his partisans in World War 2, and was left here in 1944.
I have tried to find some credible information online to substantiate this, but sadly nothing of any substance.
There aren't too many partisans still alive today to tell theses stories!
Do you know anything about the "Back Story" to this Train?
If so, do please let me know, at anenglishmaninthebalkans@gmail.com until then, I'll keep trying to find out.
UPDATE - MARCH 2020
I asked in my original post here if anyone had any back story to this train.
Andrew Lawler a Brit living in Belgrade replied:
Attached is a file I came across, with a bit more info about the train and some historic photos.
It came from the website Gerzovo.com, which has some interesting info about villages in the surrounding area.
From doing a bit more reading, the site actually seems to have been designated as a museum at some point during the 1970s, although it may well be the case that the train was already 'parked' there prior to this.
Please feel free to link to the site I am in the process of creating (which is still very much a 'work in progress'). I'm trying to photograph, map and record the condition of all monuments and memorials to the 1941-45 war on the territory of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
I've previously used your site to get some information on busts close to the airfield in Banja Luka - once I've fully written up the report for the city (which may take a while, as I have a fair few municipalities to do beforehand) a link/reference to your page on these will also be included.
Here's the link to my site's page on Mrkonjic Grad, which includes Mliniste.
You can use this to navigate around the site (lists are already up for around half of the municipalities in BiH, with reports having been uploaded for just over a dozen of them).
