Dobrodošli - Welcome.
Writing about life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, its culture, traditions and food.
“Coffee and Rakija” is a multi-media space that shares my experiences of living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an often very misunderstood country, and introduces you to some of the interesting people I’ve met along the way, the cuisine, vibrant cities, towns and villages, as well as the stunning natural landscapes of my adopted home.
Hello and welcome to Coffee and Rakija, a Substack from me, David, from my adopted home country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. And this Substack is all about stories from this heart shaped but much misunderstood country in the Western Balkans.
What can you expect from Coffee and Rakija?
Here we have two podcasts that we host on a weekly basis. One, Wednesday or Thursday, which we call Coffee Talk, where Tamara, my wife and I chat in a very informal, unedited, raw way about what's been happening in our life in the previous week.
And we also have an Englishman in the Balkans podcast, which is more formal, and where I catch up to talk to interesting people who come from not only Bosnia Herzegovina, but from the region who have got interesting stories to tell.
There are also Vlogs. I don't do too many of them at the moment, but I plan to do many more. They will be here on Substack.
As I write this in early 2024, there are some 460 text posts about this wonderful country in the Archive. So something to check out.
This Substack is FREE
I've made a conscious decision to leave the content here free for everybody. So no paywalls, but there is a cost to producing all this content and to keeping this site alive. It is a passion project. I won't lie to you. I'm forking into my own pocket to get the cash out for that. But if you would like to help in any way at all, then you can donate a coffee or (maybe two or three), or even take out a small subscription on Buy Me A Coffee, but that is entirely up to you.
What I don't want to do though, is to have people who cannot afford to pay, not to be able to read, watch, or listen to this content, because of the cost of living, I understand that everybody has got problems.
So please It is free. All you need to do is to Subscribe.
Another way to help Coffee and Rakija is to share it with your friends, that’s if you think it's relevant.
I have lived in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the past 22+ years and been publishing this Substack for just over 2 years now. I am not a journalist, but I hope that my insights and observations on everything from food, history, art, customs, and daily life in this captivating country and wider region will be interesting for you.
To find out the “Full Nine Yards” about me listen on the player above. It’s just over an hour long, so make yourself comfy with a coffee or tea.
