Today is the anniversary, of the declaration of what was to become Jugoslavija, back in 1943.
On social media there is a plethora of positive and negative posts concerning "Day of the Republic".
It's been quite some read.
Of course the "Republic" no longer exists, apart from in the minds of Jugophiles or the memories of those that actually lived in Jugoslavija.
When I talk to people about the "time under Tito", there are many anecdotes. Depending on who you talk to, they're either good or bad. Absolutely no room for any middle ground opinion.
I hate, with quite a vengeance, the revisionism that permeates the region as regards it's history.
But as a "stranac", I really do need to remain, at least outwardly, neutral. After all, how would I react to a non British person discussing British history with me? What do they know after all?
But, whatever, today is an anniversary.
The slogan (if that's the correct word to use) of the Partizan movement who created what was then modern Jugoslavija, was "Death to Fascism, Freedom for the People". Smrt fašizmu, sloboda narodu! Fascist activities in this region in the late 1930's to mid 1940's created chaos and intolerable suffering.
A fact. (I totally hope no one comments to this post, that what I have written is either "Fake News" or an "Alternate Fact").
I totally understand the slogan, which by the became a rallying cry for Anti Fascists. After the defeat of Facism, for better or worse, todays area that was then Jugoslavija, enjoyed peace and stability for 40 or so years.
Facism seems to be poking its head up around Europe again. That's sad.
As I get older, I start to see that humanity is cyclical:
Good People Create Peace.
Peace Creates Weak People.
Weak People Create Chaos.
Chaos Creates Evil People.
Evil People Create War.
Good People Create Peace.
By the way, the declaration of 29 November 1943 was made in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
